Though Mumbai figures on top of the country’s health care map, with a large number of hospitals providing top-notch health care, the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH) has accredited only five hospitals in Mumbai.

The NABH is an offshoot of the Quality Control of India (QCI), an autonomous body set up by the government in 2006, with industry support, to ensure patients get quality health care at reasonable charges.

Surprisingly, though the central government health scheme insists on an NABH accreditation for the hospital before the medical bills of its employees are reimbursed, none of the government-run hospitals have so far applied to obtain this quality stamp from NABH.

According to industry experts, NABH is the answer to the insurance companies’ recent problem regarding the cashless scheme.

“Insurance companies rejected cashless claims because they found that the hospitals were charging more than the quality of health care service given to the patient. NABH screens all such issues and the insurance company should ask for NABH-accredited hospitals only for cashless services,” said Dr Ashish Tiwari, head of medical service, Umrao hospitals.

Dr Akash Rajpal, head of Hosmac Consultancy Services said, “The central government’s health scheme, introduced for its employees, too has mentioned NABH-accredited hospitals. This scheme is analogous to health insurance schemes. It will bring down the disparity in money charged by a hospital and the service provided by them.” According to experts, currently, the surgery charges for the same operation vary from hospital to hospital.

So far, in Mumbai, LH Hiranandani, PD Hinduja, Godrej Memorial, Holy Spirit and Holy Faith hospitals have got the accreditation. A senior official admitted that NABH criteria are too stringent for government hospitals.

However, experts say old hospitals in the city like Bombay Hospital may never get the accreditation. “Old hospitals are built with a certain structure. They would need major overhauls to fit NABH criteria for bed space, number of floors and fire safety requirements, among other things,” added Rajpal.
