Two more farmers committed suicide in Nashik district in the last 24 hours after unseasonal rains in the district destroyed their crops, taking the death toll to three.

Dnyaneshwar Bhikaji Adake, 32, of Nanegaon near Deolali hung himself in his house early on Monday morning. His family members were asleep at the time of the incident.

In another case, a 22-year-old farmer, Kiran Ramesh Randive of Khedgaon village in Dindori taluka, hung himself from a tree on his farm on Monday night.

The police have registered cases of accidental death as no suicide notes were found. Both the victims’ vineyards were destroyed by the untimely rains. Nashik recorded 525 mm of rainfall in November.

A farmer from Ugaon ended his life on November 20 after his vineyard was damaged due to unseasonal rains. Villagers said Adake had taken a loan to develop 4 acres as a vineyard and was shattered after rains ruined his crop. Randive’s sister’s marriage was on the cards in December and the crop was the only hope for the debt-ridden family.

Several farmers in Nashik are trying to come to terms with the damage that the rains have caused to the crops.

“Farmers are busy battling fungus and pest attacks on the plants and crops that were drenched in the fields. Some are busy clearing their fields and this needs more labourers in this hour of crisis. But where is the money to engage labourers,” asked Shekar Jeughale, a farmer from Vinchur.

An all-party delegation staged a rasta roko at Pimpalgaon on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway-3 on Monday and held up state agriculture minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.

Led by Shiv Sena MLA Anil Kadam, NCP MLA Dilip Bankar and other party leaders, farmers blocked the convoy of the minister and disrupted traffic on the busy road. The minister met the farmers and assured them of help.
