Western Railway makes trespassers pledge not to cross tracks

Rattled by the increasing number of deaths on railway tracks, the Western Railway has launched a major anti-trespassing campaign with help from an NGO and radio jockeys.

Trespassers have to take an oath in public that they would never cross tracks again.

"Loss of precious human lives on tracks due to trespassing has always been a major concern for the Western Railway and an integrated drive has been launched by the Western Railway in association with Humanitarian Welfare and Research Foundation and a radio channel this month," said Sharat Chandrayan, chief spokesperson.

There are 89 foot overbridges and seven subways between Churchgate and Virar section. 

On Monday, a special drive on anti-trespassing and rooftop travelling was launched at Dadar station by the Foundation. A signature campaign has also been launched as a pledge not to cross tracks.  Hundreds of commuters pledged that they would not risk their lives in any way. Radio jockeys spoke to commuters, dissuading them from crossing tracks.

"Western Railway has been regularly undertaking awareness campaigns through radio channels, announcements at stations and in trains, street plays and SMS campaigns to highlight the issue and create an impact in the minds of the people," he added.
