A 23-year-old production executive of a well-known event management company, Dibakar Kandy, 23, was allegedly picked up by the Dharavi police on Wednesday midnight, beaten up on the spot and later at the police station, this time by belts, before being locked up for seven hours.

“Our company Impressario is organising a roadshow. I along with my senior Srinath Menon had gone to a garrage in Dharavi to get our company lorry branded for the upcoming show. One of my friends was to come to meet me. Since he was getting late, I came out and was enquiring from other people in the group if he had arrived. A police vehicle stopped near me. Some cops in plainclothes asked me what I was doing there. When I showed them my identiy, they said it was fake and started to beat me,” recounted Kandy.

“They told me that I was planning ‘something’ with someone and huddled me into their vehicle and whisked me away to the Dharavi police station,” said Kandy. But his ordeal did not end here. At the police station, “they beat me with their belts”.

Meanwhile, his senior got worried and came out of the garage. When he learnt from some people that a tall person (Kandy) was picked up by the police, he reached the Dharavi police station. “I was released at 7 am,” said a relieved Kandy, who could still feel the pain from the beatings. Kandy’s senior rushed him to Cooper Hospital, Juhu, which confirmed the fracture in his hands.

Though Kandy was taken to the police station no police diary was done, nor he was produced before an appropriate court. A friend of Kandy said that he was not even allowed to call up anybody from the police station.

“This can happen to anyone. The cops could have simply crosss-checked his identity than unleashing their brutality on him,” said the friend.

When contacted Senior Police Inspector, Dharavi, George PM was shocked. “I can not believe someone from my police station could have done this. I want to meet Kandy right away for a proper identification,” George said.
