BMC to teach carpentry, etc

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start two centres (Aadhar Kendra) — one in Andheri and the other in Santa Cruz — to impart vocational training to women, and also in income generation.

The centres, which will be located at ‘K-east’ and ‘K-west’ ward offices, will train primarily women in carpentry, plumbing, repairing household appliances, tailoring and beauty treatments. The civic administration hopes the effort will go a long way in empowering women. The centres will also help market and sell homemade pickles, spices and other foodstuff.

Apart from women, the centres will help men gain skill sets in areas of plumbing and electrical works.

Although the civic body has identified 10 locations for the Aadhar Kendras, only two will be initially opened on a pilot basis. Ravindra Waikar, standing committee chairman, said, “These would provide employment and self-employment opportunities.”
