In a unique initiative to encourage staff of Airports Authority of India (AAI) to vote on April 23, the director of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) has not only appealed the employees to vote but will keep check if staffs' fingers are inked or not .

Close to 500 employees of AAI will get a holiday on voting day to practice their voting rights.

In a message sent to their employees, the director said, "April 23 being a voting day in the state of Gujarat for General elections, all HOD's and sectional heads are advised to excercise their voting rights to franchise. They are also advised to motivate their subordinate staff for casting their vote which is a constitutional responsibility."

Speaking about the same, Manoj Gangal, Airport director said, "Voting is a fundamental right and I want all of us to practice the same. While I have appealed my team, I will be holding a meeting on Wednesday to checked their inked fingers. The excercise will be done just to ascertain how many have voted as we get a holiday on voting day. The aim is just to put some (positive) pressure on them so that they excercise their voting rights. I am not from Ahmedabad but have got my election card from here so that I can vote."

The officials have not yet decided what action will they be taking against those who failed to vote. It all depends on the numbers, an official said.

Appreciating the move, an airline official requesting anonymity said, "It is a great push and a way to get people vote. Many times due to laziness, people fail to vote. This accountability will go a long way."

Many companies have adopted innovative ways to urge their employees to vote. McDonald's took up a unique activation on election day in Hyderabad on April 11 by taking away the right of their customers to choose if they had not voted. Since we often kind of take our right to choose for granted, McDonald's wanted to show how it would feel if someone took that right away.
