There was a time when friendship in a Bollywood film meant sacrificing love (Dostana, 1980) and even life (Sholay, 1975) for your buddy. There have been coming-of-age tales like Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and 3 Idiots (2009). But new-age dosti is all about mentoring  (Gully Boy), accepting your pal with all his shortcomings (Kabir Singh) and standing rocksteady during tough times (Sanju).

1. Kabir Singh

Though Kabir Singh was more about Shahid Kapoor’s character and his anger management issues, what really touched everyone’s heart was the friendship between Kabir and Shiva. The audience instantly connected with the latter’s character (played by Soham Majumdar), who stood beside his friend no matter what. So much so that he was even willing to get his sister married to him.

2. Sanju

Sanju (Ranbir Kapoor) and Kamli’s (Vicky Kaushal) characters in Sanju could be perfectly termed as the next Jai-Veeru of Bollywood. Why would someone not want a friend like Kamlesh Kanhaiyalal Kapasi who stood by his friend during every hardship of his life? The scene “Tiger hai tu, roar!” gave goosebumps to everyone present in the theatre. The character is said to be based on Sanjay Dutt’s friend Paresh Ghelani.

3. Gully Boy

MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Murad Ahmed (Ranveer Singh) just slayed in Gully Boy. Murad would never have become Gully Boy had MC Sher not taught him to take risks. He acted as a morale booster and also a mentor in every aspect of life. Apart from the hard-hitting raps and dialogues, it was Sher and Murad’s friendship that was the biggest takeaway for the audience.

4. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

The movie took yaari-dosti to another level. We have seen friends fighting for each other but how many have gone through hurdles to save their buddy from an evil girlfriend? The brother-from-another-mother, Sonu (Kartik Aaryan) was always there for his innocent friend Titu (Sunny Singh). Not to forget the song Tera Yaar Hoon Main, which is a perfect dedication to all your buddies on Friendship Day!

5. Veere Di Wedding

While there have been several films on bromance, Veere Di Wedding came as a breath of fresh air highlighting the friendship between girls. The ‘Veeres’ showed that no matter what happens in life you can count on your gal pals. Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam K Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, the movie had many moments, which one could relate to with regards to their girlfriends.
