From being poles apart to married for 22 years: A look at Ajay Devgn and Kajol's love story

Kajol met Ajay Devgn on the sets of the 1995 film 'Hulchul'. Their first impressions of each other was not so pleasant as Ajay and Kajol didn't even become friends. Kajol's first impression of Ajay, as she revealed at a chat show, was, "Who’s this guy? What kind of a personality does he have? He sits in one corner and smokes like a chimney and even doesn’t speak to anybody."

Ajay Devgn also did not carry a great impression of Kajol. Talking to Pioneer, Ajay had earlier said, "I had met Kajol once before we started shooting for Hulchul. Honestly, I wasn’t very keen to meet her after that. When you meet her for the first time, she comes across as a loud, arrogant, and a very talkative person. Moreover, we were very different from each other in terms of personality. But, I guess what is meant to happen, happens."

When Ajay Devgn and Kajol first met, the duo was dating other people, however, two years after getting out of their respective relationships, during the post-production stage of their movie 'Gundaraj', the two started dating each other. Ajay and Kajol got married after 4 years of courtship in an intimate ceremony. 

Ajay had said in an interview earlier, "We didn’t rush through it. As a matter of fact, we said 'I love you'. An official proposal didn’t happen either. We fell in love, grew with each other. We took our time until we were sure that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Marriage, too, was never discussed but was always imminent."

In a Humans of Bombay post, Kajol had opened up about the dispute she had with her father as he was against her marrying Ajay Devgn at a young age. Kajol had said, "My father was against me getting married at 24. He said that I should work more before I tie the knot. His parents were on board, but my dad didn’t talk to me for 4 days. He wanted me to focus on my career, but I was firm & he eventually came around. Again, there was no proposal–we just knew we wanted to spend our lives together."

Ajay Devgn and Kajol tied the knot in a typical Maharashtrian-style wedding on February 24, 1999, at Ajay’s home. Talking about her husband, Kajol once said, "He is not a romantic person who will buy me a rose on a Valentine’s Day and I have to always remind him our wedding anniversary three days in advance but he always looks out for me. I never feel unsafe anywhere because I know he is always behind me standing there for me. He backs me one hundred percent and he knows I am there for him as well." 

In 2014, during an appearance on 'Look Who's Talking With Niranjan', Kajol had opened up about her love story with Ajay Devgn and said, "We were doing a shot together, and the shot was that I was supposed to slap him and he was supposed to very dramatically hold my hand so that I could not. I remember that moment and I remember thinking to myself, 'Oh my God'. It was one of those flashes that suddenly came to me: 'This man is going to play a very crucial role in my life, I just know it'."
