As per the book 'Rekha: The Untold Story', a controversy arose around a kissing scene featuring Rekha and male lead Biswajit Chatterjee while filming 'Anjana Safar'. 15-year-old Rekha was reportedly not notified about the kissing scene that lasted 5 minutes as director Raja Nawathe wanted to maintain her natural reaction. In later years, Rekha complained of having been tricked into the scene.

Another story is related to her marriage with Vinod Mehra. According to the book, Vinod Mehra also took her to his home after marrying Rekha secretly. But Vinod Mehra's mother was not happy with this marriage. Vinod Mehra's mother did not even allow Rekha to enter her house. She was so angry that as soon as she saw Rekha, she ran towards her with slippers. However, both Rekha and Vinod Mehra always remained silent on this matter.

Rekha was rumoured to have been married to actor Vinod Mehra in 1973, but in a 2004 television interview with Simi Garewal she denied being married to Mehra referring to him as a "well-wisher".

At one time in her career, Rakha famously charged more fees than actresses Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi and was touted to be the next superstar after Amitabh Bachchan.
