This film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Rajinikanth together for the first and only time
The recently-released Kalki 2898 AD sees Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan come together on screen after almost 40 years. Kamal Haasan has not worked in too many Hindi films since the 90s and Amitabh Bachchan has never worked in Tamil cinema. It took a Telugu film to bring them back together. Incidentally, Amitabh will be reuniting with another Tamil superstar soon. He has a cameo in Vettaiyan, which stars Rajinikanth, his co-star from 1991’s Hum. The most interesting aspect of this all is that in 1985, all three superstars came together in one film for the first and last time.

In 1984, writer-director Prayag Raaj started making Geraftaar, a crime thriller. He cast Kamal Haasan in the lead and approached Amitabh Bachchan to appear in a cameo. The actor, who had recently won the Lok Sabha elections, was cutting back on his films, decided to not go for it. But he was eventually convinced by the director. Gradually, his role was increased to that of a main character. Rajinikanth was brought in for a cameo and that is how the three superstars came together on screen for the first and only time.
Geraftaar’s release and legacy
Geraftaar was released in theatres in 1985 and was only a moderate success in India. Despite the presence of the three big stars, the film did not do too well at the box office. However, it was a massive success overseas, mostly in South East Asia. Geraftaar earned Rs 5 crore at the global box office, which was enough for it to be called a hit. It ended up among the top 10 grossing Indian films of the year. However, Amitabh Bachchan did step back from films briefly after its release, only finishing his pending films. He did return a couple of years later though.
