Tata Sons is the central investment holding company of Tata Companies with 66% of its equity share capital held by philanthropic trusts. However, there is a mystery man who owns one share in this multibillion-dollar corporation and he belongs to Gujarat's royal family.

A few years back when a list of Tata Sons shareholders was shared, it was revealed that a man named Virendra Singh Chauhan owned one share in the Tata group's parent company Tata Sons.

Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan, as he is officially known, was the king of Chota Udaipur in Gujarat. As of March 2023, he is listed as owning this single share. After he died in 2005, his heirs now lay claim to the share.

Let us tell you that in the 80s, Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan was allotted 12 or 13 shares in Tata Sons thanks to his close friendship with JRD Tata. This detail was revealed by his son Jai Pratap who added that he is unaware of the specifics of what transpired but it was likely a part of an internal reorganisation.

When companies are unlisted, it is common practice that a trusted individual is needed to take charge of them.

Jai Pratap also revealed that in 1998 Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan wanted to set up a garment manufacturing business in Bengaluru for which he sold his Tata Sons shares. However, he chose to retain one solitary share, conserving the rare honour of being a Tata Sons shareholder.

Maharawal Virendrasinhji Natwarsinhji Chauhan was the real name of Virendra Singh Chauhan. He was a descendant of Prithviraj Chauhan who inherited the thrown at the age of 11 after the death of his father Maharawal Natwarsinhji in 1946.

Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan completed his schooling at Daly College in Indore and in 1962, at the age of 25, was listed as a director of National Ekco, a Tata company founded for radio manufacturing.

In his early 30s, Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan joined the Tata Mills Board of Directors under Ratan Tata's father, Naval Tata's direction.

Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan was an influential figure and received a privy purse worth Rs 212,000 per year.

When in the 80s, JRD Tata gave ‘twelve or thirteen’ shares in Tata Sons to Maharawal Virendrasinhji Chauhan, it was a testament to the deep relationship between them.

Maharawal Virendrasinhji Natwarsinhji Chauhan’s legacy as a Tata Sons shareholder remains one of the most fascinating things in recent years. It also shows the deep relationship and trust that Tata, as one of India’s most iconic business empires, has earned.
