Released on July 4, 2008, the coming-of-age romantic comedy Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na recently celebrated 16 years of its release. Produced by Aamir Khan under his banner Aamir Khan Productions, the film marked the debut of his nephew Imran Khan. Genelia D'Souza starred as the leading lady. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was also Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut.

In a recent interview, Imran Khan shared how he had signed the film in 2005, three years before its release. He also added that the romantic comedy was stuck in limbo for few months, several actors left the project, and producers refused to finance it, before Aamir Khan decided to come on board as the producer.

Speaking to Mashable India, Imran said that Abbas Tyrewala always wanted to make a young film with new cast of actors instead of the existing stars. He also shared that when he signed the film, Jhamu Sugandh was producing it. Before Genelia, Sarah Jane Dias was cast as Aditi. When Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na went into pre-production, Jhamu Sugandh faced some financial difficulties. At that time, he was also producing Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal and Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar, both of which were being shot. Once the funds came in, they went into those two movies as they were already on the floors. Thus, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was stuck in limbo for around six months and around that time, several actors dropped out from the project.

Then, Abbas approached a couple of producers, who asked him to replace Imran and cast their son in the film, but he stuck to his guns. At that time, Imran also asked his uncle Aamir Khan to introduce him to someone at UTV Films. "I asked him to introduce us to someone at UTV as we are trying to find a producer, and he took a characteristic Aamir Khan pause and said, 'You know, I am a producer." But he was more of a serious producer. He had made Lagaan, he was making Taare Zameen Par. I told him 'You are making a film on dyslexia, why would you be interested in a college romcom?' He said it's nothing like that, let me hear the script", Imran recalled. He added that they waited for six months for Aamir to read the script and after he heard it from Abbas and finally came on board as the producer in late 2006.

After around 18 months of shooting and post production, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was finally released and became a commercial success. Made in Rs 15 crore, the film grossed Rs 85 crore worldwide and became one of the most popular romantic comedies in the history of Bollywood.
