Baskar Subramanian’s family couldn’t afford a computer at home but he managed to sell his first piece of software in Class 11. He got admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), but decided to drop out of his course mid way. Subramanian, a middle-class boy from a Bill Gates-inspired 90s generation, is today the successful co-founder of tech unicorn Amagi Media Labs.

Inspired by the legendary Microsoft founder early in his life, Subramanian was passionate about software and could immerse in it only thanks to the computer lab at school. He graduated as a Computer Science engineer from GCT Coimbatore and then landed at IIT Bombay for MTech.

Subramanian wasn’t looking for a “good job” but was only dreaming of being an entrepreneur. He found no reason to finish his course and dropped out. After working for Texas Instruments, he opened a company called Impulsesoft that made audio headsets and Bluetooth watches in 2004. After he sold the venture, Subramanian co-founded Amagi in 2008.

He drove growth as CEO along with co-founders KA Srinivasan and Srividhya Srinivasan. Subramanian took his already profitable venture to a valuation of more than a billion dollars when Amagi raised around Rs 800 crore in November 2022. The company reached a $1.4 billion (over Rs 11,500 crore) valuation. The company is one of the leaders in the SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) segment.
