There are numerous examples of successful businessmen in India who started their business with a small idea and then turned it into a huge business empire. However, in this article, we will tell you about one man who visited India on a causal trip in 2010 and then built a successful quick-service restaurant. His name is Bert Mueller, an American entrepreneur.
He co-founded California Burrito with two Americans Dharam Khalsa and Gaelan Draper. Today, California Burrito has a presence in over 50 locations, generating a remarkable Rs 110+ crore annually. The company is based in Bengaluru.
Mueller is the Director at Burrito Restaurants Pvt. Ltd since 2011. Before this, he worked at Moe's Southwest Grill in the US. He holds a bachelor's degree in Art from The College of William and Mary. For their business, they each invested USD 15,000 and raised an additional USD 250,000 from family and friends. They used a Tumblr blog for the investment and it documented their startup’s journey.
When Bert Mueller first visited India in 2010. Initially, the trio thought they’d launch their inaugural restaurant in Gurugram. However, they chose Bengaluru because real estate was more affordable there. Mueller and Draper spent the first six months behind the counter serving burritos himself.
In May, California Burrito celebrated its most successful location launch ever when it expanded to Chennai. They now have a presence in Bengaluru, NCR, Hyderabad and Chennai.
