Robin Singh to Gary Kirsten: Six candidates who are hoping to replace incumbent Ravi Shastri as Indian coach

Former cricketer Robin Singh has confirmed to have applied for the position. The all-rounder has been coaching ever since he retired from international cricket in 2001. 

Having started with coaching the India U-19 team, he went on to coach Hong Kong, India A, before being introduced to the national side as a fielding coach in 2007.

As for his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he started off as the head coach of Deccan Chargers. He was soon taken by Mumbai Indians (MI) as a coach. After being the head coach for three years, he then went on to be the batting coach for the franchise which won four trophies.

He has also been the head coach of Khulna Division, Uva, City Kaitak, Karaikudi Kaalai, Kerala Kings, Northern Warriors and Barbados Tridents.

Former manager Lalchand Rajput has also confirmed applying for the role. He is currently the head coach of Zimbabwe and is open to the position of batting coach, according to reports.

The former Mumbai opener - who also played for India - has coached Afghanistan from 2016 to 2017 and domestic side Assam apart from a team in the T20 Mumbai League for two years. 

He also has been named as the coach of the Winnipeg Hawks in 2019 GT20 Canada.

The 2011 World Cup-winning India team's head coach is rumoured to have reapplied for the role.

In 2008, the South African had succeeded Greg Chappell and managed to introduce fresh ideas to the team.

After winning the tournament, he went on to manage his home nation’s cricket team for two years. He even coached Delhi Daredevils (2014, 2015) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2018, 2019).

His name had even popped up when BCCI were looking to replace Ramesh Powar as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team. The responsibility ultimately went to Indian cricketer WV Raman.

Michael Hesson is also rumoured to have applied for the position of the head coach. He was New Zealand’s longest-serving coach and was at the helm of the Black Caps for six years.

He took the Kiwis to the 2015 World Cup final which marked his tenure as one of the most successful ones in New Zealand.

He currently is serving as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab and has previously coached Argentina and Kenya and Otago in NZ domestic cricket previously.

Tom Moody had lost to Greg Chappell back in 2005 and now he is rumoured to have applied back for the position of head coach.

The 53-year-old has led Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final and even coached Western Australia in the 2007 Big Bash League.

In the IPL, he has coached the likes of Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad and was even appointed the head coach of Rangpur Riders in Bangladesh Premier League.

Mahela Jayawardene is also rumoured to have applied for the role to replace Ravi Shastri. 

The 42-year-old has more than 20,000 international runs, he also lead Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup final and played a vital role in their 2014 World Twenty20 win.

He also helped the Lankan side reach the finals of 2011 World Cup, 2009 World Twenty20 and 2012 World Twenty20.

He even saw success as Mumbai Indians head coach, winning two IPL trophies in the last three years. He also has served as a batting consultant for England and as the head coach of Khulna Titans in the Bangladesh Premier League.
