Prithvi Shaw kicked-off his Test career in style in India’s first Test against West Indies in Rajkot last week.
The 18-year-old smashed a spectacular hundred on debut and became only the 15th Indian Test batsman to do so.
Shaw also had become India’s only teenage to score a half-century on Test debut. However, Shaw became the third Test debutant opener from Mumbai to score a fifty in his first innings. KC Ibrahim (1948-49) and Sunil Gavaskar (1970-71) were the others.
Overall, Shaw was the fifth youngest opener to score a half-century in his maiden Test innings after 17y Hanif Mohammad, Stollmeyer, Tamim Iqbal and Imran Farhat.
During the final innings of the second Test on Day three, Shaw took a single on the second delivery of the 16th over and leveled the scores for India. However, his batting partner, KL Rahul failed to score a run in the next four balls.
That meant, Shaw returned to strike and he was one hit away from recording yet another history in his debut Test series.
West Indian Bishoo was with the ball, who bowled a bit wide and wasting no time, Shaw leaned forward and drilled it through covers for a boundary.
By doing so, Shaw (18y 339d) was the second youngest to hit the winning runs in a Test after Pat Cummins (18y 198d) against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2011.
Shaw and Rahul remained unbeaten on 33 each as India sealed the second Test against West Indies by 10 wickets in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Shaw’s 45-ball knock was inclusive of four boundaries, while Rahul smashed two fours and a six during his 53-ball 33.
Earlier, India bowled out the West Indies for 127 in their second innings and had set themselves an easy target of 72 runs.
Virat Kohli-led side had taken a 56-run first innings lead after scoring 367 in reply to West Indies' 311 all out.
Sunil Ambris top-scored for the tourists with his 38-run knock while pacer Umesh Yadav (4 for 45) and spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 12) shared seven wickets between them for the hosts.
By picking four more wickets in the third innings, Umesh clinched his maiden 10-wicket haul in Tests.
Umesh was India’s just second pacer to bag a 10-wicket haul at home in nearly two decades. Javagal Srinath was the previous one who had registered figures of 13 for 122 against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Overall, Yadav was only the third Indian pacer with a 10-wicket haul in the longest format at home after Srinath and Kapil Dev. The former Indian captain also registered this milestone against Pakistan with figures of 11 for 146 in Chennai in 1980.
