Shreyas Iyer's maiden ODI ton against New Zeland surely must have gone waste, but the batsman has made sure to seal his position in the most debated No. 4 spot in the Indian team.

The batsman came in at a crucial time and helped India put on a mammoth score of 347 with the help of skipper Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul.

Despite the huge total, the Kiwis managed to run through India's bowling order and defeated them by four wickets.

Talking to reporters after the ODI series opener, Shreyas Iyer spoke about his conversation with KL Rahul after he hit the first ball he faced for a six.

Shreyas said, "The time KL Rahul came in and the first six he hit, I literally asked him on the field 'Are you seeing the ball as a football?' and he just nodded and laughed over it".

Shreyas also spoke about how he still needs to learn a lot, especially from players like KL Rahul.

"He's been in tremendous touch and there's a lot to learn from him as well, as a batsman, the way he plans his innings and takes on the bowler," the No. 4 batsman said.

Shreyas Iyer scored 103 off 107 while KL Rahul (88 not out) and Virat Kohli (51) backed him as they had taken India to a good total. However, seasoned Ross Taylor anchored the Kiwi chase with an unbeaten 109 run-knock.

India will next face New Zealand on February 8 (Saturday) at Eden Park, Auckland.
