Former New Zealand cricketer Martin Guptill fondly reminisced about a significant moment in World Cup history by sharing a captivating story on Instagram. It was five years ago today that India faced heartbreak at the 2019 World Cup when they were knocked out by New Zealand in the semi-final.

The match, which took place on July 9 at Old Trafford in Manchester, was marred by rain and had to be continued the next day.

After Kane Williamson opted to bat and Indian bowlers took early wickets, rain forced a halt in play. However, Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson formed a crucial partnership, with Williamson scoring 67 runs to propel New Zealand past 100 before play was suspended.

Despite a valiant effort from the Indian bowlers, New Zealand managed to reach a total of 239/8.

During India's chase, they faced a tough situation as they found themselves at 24/4 when MS Dhoni stepped up to bat. The pressure continued to mount as the Men in Blue slipped to 92/6. However, a remarkable partnership of 116 runs between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja reignited India's hopes.

But with 25 runs needed off just 10 balls, Dhoni's attempt to retain the strike backfired as he was run out by Guptill's direct hit. This run out effectively crushed India's chances of a comeback and shattered any hopes of a victory.

In the end, India fell short and were all out for 221 in 49.3 overs.

Guptill took to Instagram and shared, then deleted, images with the caption: "Figured out why I am getting so much hate today."

It's worth noting that last year, the Kiwi batter had revealed that he still receives hate mail from India.

"Lucky enough to get a direct hit from out there, lucky for us he was out of his ground," Guptill had stated in an ICC video.
