Team India's middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer's maiden ODI century went in vain as New Zealand defeated India by four wickets at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Wednesday (February 5).

The Men in Blue could not defend their mammoth 347 total as seasoned Ross Taylor anchored the Kiwi chase with an unbeaten 109 run-knock.

The Indian bowlers struggle continued as the hosts overhauled the target with 11 balls to spare.

After the match, Iyer took to Twitter to express his thoughts over India's four-wicket loss in the first ODI and claimed that while he is happy to register his maiden ODI ton in the Blue shirt, he still that was not the ending he was looking for on the day.

"Not the way we wanted the match to go, but scoring a century for my country was a special moment. One that I've been dreaming about since I first held a bat."

"Thank you to the management for the opportunity and their continued faith in me. Onwards and upwards now #TeamIndia," Iyer's post read on Twitter.

In chase of a target score of 348, the BlackCaps got a comfortable start but the wickets of Tom Latham (69) and James Neesham (9) and Colin de Grandhomm (1) disrupted the batting line-up.

However, Taylor cemented his place on the field and did not let the host lose another winning match.

Earlier, sent into bat first, Shreyas Iyer (103 off 107), KL Rahul (88 not out) and Virat Kohli (51) took India to a good total.

With a 1-0 lead under their belt in the three-match ODI series, New Zealand are set to take on India in Auckland on Saturday (February 8) for the second match.
