Amid reports that the BCCI is planning to remove Virat Kohli as captain of ODI and T20 and give the mantle to Rohit Sharma, BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Monday (September 13) said that Kohli will remain the Team India captain as long as India continues to perform on the field.
“As long as a team is performing while on the crease, the question of change in captaincy doesn’t arise,” Jay Shah said.
It is to be noted that Kohli has a superb record across formats as a captain but he has failed to win a major ICC trophy as captain so far. Kohli-led Team India came very close to winning the ICC World Test Championship where the team lost to New Zealand. India last won the ICC Trophy in 2013 when MS Dhoni led the Men In Blue to glory at the Champions Trophy.
Notably, Dhoni, who took retirement from international cricket in 2020, has been appointed as mentor for the T20 World Cup in UAE. It seems that the BCCI wants to use Dhoni's rich experience for the benefit of Team India.
The announcement of Dhoni joining Team India as mentor during the T20 World Cup was made by Jay Shah last week.
“He (Dhoni) was okay with my decision and agreed to be the mentor for Team India for the T20 World Cup only. I am glad that MS (Dhoni) has accepted the BCCI’s offer and is keen to contribute to the national team once again. MS will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as other support staff to provide support and direction to Team India,” the BCCI secretary had said.
Jay Shah also said that both Kohli and India head coach Ravi Shastri were informed before appointing Dhoni as the mentor. “I spoke to the captain and vice-captain, as well as Ravi Shastri. They all are on the same page, so that’s why this matter has reached this conclusion," he said.
