CRICKET
Virender Sehwag, the former India cricket team opener, has said that Rohit Sharma and David Warner have the capability to break Brian Lara’s world record individual record of 400 in Tests. However, Virender Sehwag did not name Virat Kohli as the contender to break Lara’s record which was achieved in 2004 in Antigua against England.
For international cricketers, the record of 400 individual runs in a Test innings by Brian Lara is the ultimate accomplishment of their batting prowess. Brian Lara, the former West Indies skipper and considered one of the greatest in the game, created history in 2004 during the fourth and final Test against England in Antigua when he smashed a world record 400. Incidentally, 10 years ago, on the same ground in 1994, Brian Lara had smashed 375 which broke the-then world record highest individual score of 365 set by Sir Garfield Sobers against Pakistan. For 16 years now, players have tried to break Brian Lara’s record but they have failed to accomplish it. However, Virender Sehwag believes that two batsmen are capable of breaking Brian Lara’s record of 400. In his daily social media show, titled Viru ki Baithak, Virender Sehwag answered a query to a fan as to who might break Lara’s record.
In his typical style, Sehwag replied, “If anyone can break this record of Lara, it is David Warner and Rohit Sharma. If Rohit Sharma has one and a half days (and he bats aggressively) and they happen, then they can break these records.”
It was a surprise that Sehwag did not mention Virat Kohli’s name, as the Indian cricket team skipper has the most double tons by an Indian player with seven.
Recently, David Warner notched up the second-highest individual score in Tests by an Australian batsman when he smashed 335 in the Pink Ball Test against Pakistan in Adelaide, overhauling the mark of 334 set by Sir Don Bradman but 45 runs behind Matthew Hayden’s mark of 380 which is the second-highest in Test history as Tim Paine decided to declare the innings.
Virender Sehwag is the only Indian player in Test history to smash two triple centuries. His first triple century was against Pakistan in Multan in 2004 while he smashed a magnificent 319 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008. Sehwag could have created history and smashed Sir Don Bradman’s record of hitting three triple tons in Tests but on 293, he was dismissed in the 2009 Test against Sri Lanka in Brabourne.
