The Indian cricket team is gearing up for a transition at the helm after Rahul Dravid recently left the Indian dressing room after winning the glorious T20 World Cup 2024. Rumours are rife that former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir is all set to take over the mantle and as of now Gautam Gambhir and BCCI are in the "final stages of salary negotiations".

In his recent statements, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah indicated that the Cricket Advisory Committee has completed interviews and shortlisted candidates, with Gambhir leading the race alongside former women's team coach WV Raman. Additionally, the appointment of a new selector is imminent.

Gautam Gambhir was recently also spotted shooting a farewell video for the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, signaling the end of his second innings at Shah Rukh Khan's IPL franchise.

But despite all this, there has been a significant delay in BCCI announcing Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

The main reason behind this reportedly is salary negotiations. As per a report in The Indian Express, Gautam Gambhir and BCCI are currently in the "final stages of salary negotiations" and the moment the remuneration is finalised, BCCI will make the announcement.

For the unversed, in the advertisement inviting applicants for the head coach position, BCCI mentioned that the remuneration is “negotiable and will be commensurate with experience."

Rahul Dravid's yearly remuneration was around Rs 12 crore and Gautam Gambhir's is expected to draw a higher salary than him.

If Gautam Gambhir is announced as India's next head coach, it will be his first assignment in this manner on a national level. He was previously a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants for a couple of seasons before switching to KKR last year.

Currently, the Indian team is in Zimbabwe and is playing under the guidance of NCA head VVS Laxman. After this, India is set to travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series with a new head coach, as per BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
