Four men who duped people by claiming they were CBI officers, by promising them government jobs, were arrested by the Delhi police on Friday. Police said at the time of arrest, one of the accused even introduced himself as a Sub-Inspector of the CBI and produced a fake identity card.

The accused were identified as Ankit Singh alias Sachhu, a BA graduate, Ajit Pratap Singh graduate in Microbiology, Rawender Singh and Gyanendra Kumar, an MBA graduate. Officers said the gang's modus operandi was ingenious. Rawender Singh who was the mastermind of the job racket, would inform various agents through Whatsapp massages of vacancies in government departments such as the Food Corporation of India, Railways, State Bank of India, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Income Tax and others. He also ensured candidates of a job for a cost.

"He (Singh) used to charge anything between 3.5 lakh to 8 lakh depending upon the nature of job. The job agents who received the messages arranged candidates and sent documents as well as the payments to Rawender Singh. He then conducted formalities to gain the candidates confidence. He did this through forged appointment letters, identity card," said Nupur Prasad, DCP Shahadra.

The racket was busted when one of the complainants reported to the police that he was introduced to Rawender Singh at a hotel in Delhi. Singh introduced himself as a CBI officer and had assured the complainant of a government job for which he demanded Rs 3.5 lakh. "The complainant was called to Lucknow where he made the payment. He was then asked to fill up a form to come to Kanpur for training. Here, he was later informed that somebody else would undergo the training on his behalf but that his job in the Food Corporation of India was secure. For this, he was given an identity card."

"Later on, one of the gang members called him and took back the identity card, informing him that he would get a new one at the time of joining. After he was asked to make a few more payments, the complainant sensed that he was been cheated and approached the police," the DCP said.

The officer said that based on technical surveillance one of the gang members Ankit Singh was nabbed. On interrogation, Ankit revealed the names and whereabouts of the other gang members. They were arrested and several forged documents were recovered from them.
