Amitava Mukherjee holds the additional charge of the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC). Mukherjee is a Director (Finance) at NMDC. He is an ex-civil servant who belongs to the 1995 batch of Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS).

In 2018, he joined NMDC as Director (Finance). Prior to joining NMDC, he was General Manager (Finance) in Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for three years. NMDC is an Indian public sector undertaking involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, graphite, coal etc. It is India’s largest producer of iron ore. The company has a market capitalisation of Rs 43,461 crore as of October 3, 2023. The share of the government-owned company was Rs 147.85 on Tuesday.

Mukherjee has a Master of Commerce Degree from Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur. He is also a Cost Accountant. During his service in IRAS from 1997-2016, he held key positions in the Eastern Railways and received the National Award for Outstanding Services in 2006. Before joining IRAS, he worked at Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) from 1994-1997.

In his tenure as Director (Finance), NMDC has recorded the best-ever financial performance in company history with sky-high turnover, profit before tax and profit after tax in FY22.
