Condoling the death of veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Sunday said the industry has lost an "iconic figure."

The 79-year-old actor died this morning at Breach Candy Hospital here.

Chavan said, "With his death, the industry has lost an iconic figure."

Union Minister for Science and Technology Vilasrao Deshmukh said, "Shammi Kapoor was a superstar of our era. His dance style was a rage in our times. He was a fatherly figure for film industry. This is a big loss to the film fraternity."

Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said today was a "sad day" for Bollywood.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said with the demise of Shammi Kapoor a "colourful era" of the Hindi film industry has come to an end.
