The Golden Globes night is here. Who's who of Hollywood has worked to get recognised on one of the best platforms available. The year has been incredible as ever. Box-office records were broken within a blink of an eye. Franchise were formed, rejuvenated; Indie movies grabbed the attention; animation reached new levels of excellence. Now it's time to think and see who can be the best of best. Shall we?

Best Motion Picture Drama -

Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

This is one tough category to pick one clear winner. Tom Haynes' lesbian drama Carol sees the strong-willed woman navigate her life in the times when being a homosexual was more of a crime than anything. Taking the time further back in the era of pioneers, revenge saga of The Revenant has garnered critical acclaim. But the ensemble drama of Spotlight will win this category. The stellar performance by the cast and smart editing will prove strong points for Spotlight.

Prediction - Spotlight
Maybe - The Revenant

Best Actress Drama -

Cate Blanchett - Carol
Brie Larson - Room
Rooney Mara - Carol
Saoirse Ronan - Brooklyn
Alicia Vikander - The Danish Girl

Alicia Vikander did a phenomenal job in The Danish Girl to the level of making us question who is the actual Danish girl we are reading the story of. Cate Blanchett's change of expressions in Carol cover the confidence of Carol in her skin and then care of the mother and then desire for her lover. But this could be Brie Larson's year as Jennifer Lawrence proclaimed. Keeping together in the captivity and then the sudden freedom are two parts of Room. Brie Larson amazes in the performance.

Prediction - Brie Larson for Room
Maybe - Cate Blanchett for Carol

Best Actor Drama

Bryan Cranston - Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant
Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne - The Danish Girl
Will Smith - Concussion

This is Leonardo DiCaprio's year. The bear scene in The Revenant alone is worth a lot of awards. Holding the screen with none to very little dialogue is a tough job. But Leonardo DiCaprio lives the character. Eddie Redmayne  may have a shot with his portrayal of Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl. The change in the posture and the struggle with realising her sexuality has been done to the perfection by this Oscar-winner.

Prediction - Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant
Maybe - Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl

Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical

The Big Short
Joy
The Martian
Spy
Trainwreck

The Big Short is the clear winner if we are focusing on the technical definition of a comedy. But The Martian being in the same category is puzzling and could possibly harm the chances of a brilliant ensemble movie.

Prediction - The Big Short
Maybe - The Martian

Best Actress Comedy

Jennifer Lawrence - Joy
Melissa McCarthhy - Spy
Amy Schumer - Trainwreck
Maggie Smith - The Lady in the Van
Lily Tomlin - Grandma

Amy Schumer came like a storm on Hollywood canvas. Her Trainwreck has paid off every penny it needed to make and some more. Melissa McCarthy was Melissa McCarthy in Spy. Nothing new to offer. I seriously don't now why Joy is considered a comedy and to be honest, this is not one of Jennifer Lawrence's best performances. There is a good chance Dame Maggie Smith will take the statuette for her portrayal in The Lady in the Van.

Prediction - Amy Schumer for Trainwreck
Maybe - Maggie Smith for The Lady in the Van

Best actor Comedy

Christian Bale - The Big Short
Matt Damon - The Martian
Al Pacino - Danny Collins
Mark Ruffalo - Infinitely polar bear
Steve Carell - The Big Short

Steve Carell and Christian Bale will split votes for The Big Short, hampering the chances for the other. Matt Damon's Mark Whatney has his funny moments. Then I can raise the same questions like I raised for Joy and Jennifer Lawrence.

Prediction - Matt Damon for The Martian
Maybe - Steve Carell for The Big Short

Best Motion picture - Animated

Anamolisa
The Good Dinosaur
Inside Out
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun the Sheep

There is not a shadow of a doubt that Pixar marvel Inside Out will win in this category.

Best Motion Picture - Foreign language

The Brand New Testament - Belgium
The Club - Chile
The Fencer - Finland
Mustang - France
Son of Saul - Hungary

Critics have been gushing over Son of Saul from Hungary. The directorial debut of Laszlo Nemes shows the struggles of one man within Nazi camp.

Best Actress in Supporting Role -

Jane Fonda - Youth
Jennifer Jason Leigh - The Hateful Eight
Helen Mirren - Trumbo
Alicia Viaknder - Ex Machina
Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs

Alicia Vikander's performance in Ex Machina has been lauded by many. But a tough competition might come from Kate Winslate's portrayal of Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs. Jennifer Jason Leigh's crude performance in The Hateful Eight too can cause a stir and be a possible upset.

Prediction - Alicia Vikander for Ex Machina
Maybe - Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs

Best Actor in Supporting Role

Paul Dano - Love & Mercy
Idris Elba - Beasts of No Nation
Mark Rylance - Bridge of Spies
Michael Shanon - 99 Homes
Sylvester Stallone - Creed

Sylverster Stallone is being considered as the sure winner in this category. The sentimentality of first recognition in the career of 39 years means a lot. Not to mention, he is best at his best, The Rocky series! Idris Elba's commandant in Beasts of No Nation is the character you are compelled to loathe. Such is the acting. This win could make a room for Netflix at the big boys' table.

Prediction - Sylvester Stallone for Creed
Maybe - Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation

Best Director

Tod Haynes - Carol
Alejandro G Inarritu - The Revenant
Tom McCarthy - Spotlight
George Miller - Mad Max: The Fury Road
Ridley Scott - The Martian

This is a showdown between Ridley Scott and George Miller. Critical acclaim and box office numbers speak volume of their work. Inarritu could be the possible upset.

Prediction - Ridley Scott for The Martian
Maybe - George Miller for Mad Max: The Fury Road

Best Screenplay

Emma Donoghue - Room
Tom McCarthy, John Singer - Spotlight
Quentin Tarantino - The Hateful Eight
Charles Rudolph, Adam Mckay - The Big Short
Aaron Sorkin - Steve Jobs

Spotlight and The Big Short have an ensemble cast. Keeping all the players in the loop without losing the grip on a single character and narrative of the story is the biggest challenge while writing a screenplay. Therefore, Tom McCarthy and John Singer for Spotlight and Charles Rudolph and Adam Mckay for The Big Short will be my first choice for this category

Prediction - Charles Rudoplh and Adam Mckay for The Big Short
Maybe - Tom McCarthy and John Singer for Spotlight

Original Score

Carter Burwell - Carol
Alexandre Desplat - The Danish Girl
Ennio Morricone - The Hateful Eight
Daniel Pemberton - Steve Jobs
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto - The Revenant

What Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto's music brings to The Revenant is phenomenal. The snowy planes feel more painful and forest doesn't end. They are sure winner of the category.

Original Song

Love me like you do - Fifty Shades of Grey
One Kind of Love - Love and Mercy
See you again - Furious 7
Simple Song 3 - Youth
Writing's on the wall - Spectre

Sentimentality will decide the vote on this one. 'See You Again' from Furious 7 by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth has better chance than anyone else. Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth has better chance than anyone else.
