You’ve seen her in films and on the stage - now Lillete Dubey is back on the small screen with ‘By Invitation Only’

“I am very excited about this show,” she starts off, “I am back on television after seven years.” Anchoring a show for Times Now, Lillete claims this is  a fresh new experience for her. “On stage I am used to a set script and learning lines. I have never had to be out on a limb like this, improvising on a working script!”

When the channel approached her nine months ago, she found their offer ‘flattering and seductive’. “They had more faith in me than I had myself,” she says, “but since I am always looking out for new challenges, I decided to give it a shot.” Ask her about the show and pat comes the answer, “I told them that I wouldn’t do a totally glamour and showbiz related show because then we are doing a disservice to achievers in different fields.” Television as she sees it allows an artist to experiment the most and has maximum potential and scope.

Happy to be working with a young bunch of people who are ‘enthusiastic and always have new ideas’, Lillete says it is a task “interviewing people in their natural environs and yet looking well-groomed.” Though not an overtly provocative show, she does throw the person in the hot seat a one-off googly. “It is about asking questions that the audience would like answered,” she says, “an intelligent yet fun show. Not frivolous fun.”

Television is not the only thing occupying the lady. “This year, I believe I will finally make my film.” Having finalised a script by Mahesh Dattani and approached Juhi Chawla, Esha Deol and daughter dearest Neha Dubey, Lillete hopes that she will be able to juggle a little bit of stage, films and finish her own debut venture.

“My younger daughter is in town and I want to do a play with her before I start on the film, plus I have completed a few films and am shooting for one in February,” says this workaholic. “I’m a greedy actor always on the lookout for an interesting role which I don’t want to miss,” is how she describes herself.
