‘I’m the band’s Shania Twain’

Maroon 5 is back with great aplomb with their latest “sexual and sensual album” — Hands All Over. The title track was written when Adam Levine, the lead singer of the band, was going through a break-up. “It was a feeling of desperation — like just stop talking, let’s just compensate for our shortcomings
emotionally by having sex,” says Adam.

“Sensual lyrics and our attitude work best for us,” says Adam. “We do what we love. If you like us, we thank you, if you don’t we don’t care.” An out an out conceptual album, Hands All Over took a year-long time for its completion. And in the process, we heard our songs over and over again.”

Ask him to define his sound, and the lead singer who is known for his unique voice, says, “I am the band’s Shania Twain for sure.” Adam

asserts that many have inspired the music of Maroon 5; Mutt Lange (the producer who joined hands with the band for their third album) being one of them. It is the eclectic taste of the four band members which helps them make good music. “We mix our likings and form our music. It sounds different in all our songs,” says Adam. Though he hasn’t heard much of Indian music, A R Rahman and Anoushka Shankar are the only two Indian musicians he has heard of.

Talking about the changing trends of music marketing, Adam says, “It would be great if we are able to sell our records in a digital media format which would ensure no wastage of materials and resources.”

Clearly their music hasn’t changed much over the years. “We do not necessarily sound like a band,” says Adam. “We started making music at the age of 13 and have turned 31 now. We have been together for 18 years now, which is pretty much an achievement.”

Adam is convinced that the band is at the peak of its career and is
“totally loving it”. And hence the band members chose to just relax for a while. “Maybe in a few months we’ll plan a tour.”
