Pretty as a postcard is how actor Suchitra Pillai tells you of the family trip she made to Denmark with her husband Lars (who is Danish) and two-year-old daughter Annika.

“Initially, Lars’ family was supposed to come to India for X’mas and when plans changed about a month before December, we decided to make the trip there,” she says.

Quiet retreat

It was a holiday minus the usual noise, loud cacophony of tourists etc and as Suchitra says, “I like a holiday with no real agenda. As life in Mumbai is quite hectic, it was nice to be able to just unwind totally.”

Nature, of course, was the catalyst. “We stayed in a town called Kongerslev which has only about 2,000 inhabitants, endless fields and about 25 minutes drive away from the closest city Aalborg. “Lars’ mum lives in a pretty town surrounded by fields, farms and windmills. It was covered in snow from the day we arrived — so picturesque,” she smiles.

Family fun
The weather was freezing. “It went down to -10 degrees once. What fun it was using the sled on the snow-filled roads and building a snow lady! Annika had never seen the snow and she had to be dressed like a little astronaut in layers before she went out to play.”  They drove about too. “I visited a few old castles in Denmark, plus there are forests nearby where you can catch deer. We also caught up with friends in Aalborg city.” Most of the time,     however, they were at home as it was X’mas and a traditional family affair.

Traditional food
Lunch was an affair that had everyone helping out. “I love the traditional Christmas food, especially the dessert called Riz Allamange — a rice pudding with cherry sauce — absolutely fabulous!”

Did they bring a few souvenirs back? “Well, we got a lot of presents so we didn’t have to shop too much,” she grins.
Suchitra also brushed up on her Danish. “My favourite sentence during this trip was probably Glaedelig Jul and Godt Nytaar which means Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” she says.
