AR Rahman is back with his music for Ashutosh Gowariker's Mohenjo Daro. Earlier this director-musician combo has given us memorable songs in films like Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar. However, this time the duo fail to impress us. Songs in Mohenjo Daro are far below the standards of classics like O Mitwa, Ye Taara Wo Taara, Yun Hi Chala, Khwaja Mere Khwaja and Jashn-E-Bahara.
Starring Hrithik Roshan, Pooja Hegde and Kabir Bedi in the lead roles, has already earned the ire of Twitter trolls for its action sequences and 'period' costumes. Sadly, the music album doesn't do much better.
MOHENJO MOHENJO
Sung by Arijit Singh and Bela Shende as the lead singers, Mohenjo Mohenjo also has AR Rahman, Sanah Moidutty and a group of backup singers. The last time music maestro Rahman and Arijit Singh came together was for 'Agar Tum Saath Ho' from Tamasha. This time however they fail to strike the same chord.
Sure the song gives a period feel, but Javed Akhtar's lyrics are a bit disappointing. While the use of different instruments in one song is impressive, the extreme stress on shuddh Hindi lyrics prevent you from playing the song on loop. National Award winning Bela Shende has previously sung 'Mann Mohana' from Jodhaa Akbar and the popular Marathi song 'Wajle Ki Baara'. And this time again, she gives her best.
SINDHU MA
The next song on the playlist is 'Sindhu Ma', which is sung by Rahman and Sanah Moidutty. It is a song written in praise of the river Sindhu. Frankly, the best part of the song only begins when 'Tu Hai' (the best song in this album, in my opinion) is interspersed with 'Sindhu Ma'. Otherwise, the song really has nothing to offer.
SARSARIYA
Sung by Shashaa Tirupati and Shashwat Singh, the song has use of various instruments like bass percussion, tabla, flute and even mandolin. Shashaa and Rahman have often collaborated in the past but mostly for South Indian films. This is the first time she is singing for Rahman in a Bollywood movie and the young singer sure has put her best foot forward. This is definitely Shashaa's song more than Shashwat's.
The instrumental version of the song is 'Lakh Lakh Tora' is excellent too, however, I like Shashaa's version better.
TU HAI
This is the only song whose video has been released and it got trolled big time last week. The less said about the video the better, and it's painful to think that such a beautiful rendition by Rahman was ruined with this meaningless video. (You can read the review of the video song here.)
'Tu Hai' is romantic song sung by Rahman and Sanah Moidutty. The lyrics penned by Akhtar have been beautifully woven into the song of the year, if I will, by Rahman. The instrumental version of this song titled 'The Shimmer of Sindhu' is melodious too and will get you hooked on to it. 'Tu Hai' is the only to look out for in this rather mediocre album.
'Tu Hai' is playing on loop as I write this.
WHISPERS OF THE MIND/ WHISPERS OF THE HEART
Two instrumental songs which sound like each other's extension. Vocals sung by Arjun Chandy and backup singers make the perfect hypnotic rhythm of chants with good use of instruments. There's a calming tune which are reminiscent of hymn chants in a Buddhist monastery.
