Budding fashion designer Shubra Gupta Sharma, who weaved her magic in movies like Dev D and Gullal, shares her experience on designing for movies.

Tell us what prompted you to take up fashion designing? And about your experience at NIFT?
Clothing is something which would define a personality; it was an early fascination which with time grew up on me and I became more convinced with the idea of becoming a fashion designer. It is such a beautiful feeling to adorn someone and enhance their beauty.

NIFT being a premier fashion institute in Asia gave me a platform to understand fashion in international context. Studying fashion in NIFT made me a designer in a true sense.

How was it working with designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed as an intern?
During my course,  I interned under the genius Narendra Kumar Ahmed from there he liked my work and I joined him as a full time assistant designer after my college. I assisted him for fashion weeks, styling shoots, movies and ad films. Nari was a mentor for me. He gave me full freedom to express myself through my work which helped me grow as an individual designer. This is something very few get to do in this field. Working with him I realised that how much hard work goes in making a mark for yourself.  Nari is ‘Nari’ not because of luck or fluke but out of sheer hard work.

How did movies happen — tell us the whole experience?
With Nari, I did quite a few films like Aladdin, Babul and finally No Smoking. Anurag Kashyap noticed my work in No Smoking and asked me to do the costumes for Aamir by Rajkumar Gupta and then Dev.D. That’s where things took flight and I did Gulaal and a short film Boond by Abhishek Pathak.

Working with Anurag I got to understand the visual language of films.  I think he is the best director we have in our industry. Our industry has misinterpreted glamour big time.  It was exciting to work with Anurag Kashyap and (Dop) Rajeev Ravi because both are masters in their craft. The whole experience especially with Dev D, Gulaal, and That Girl in Yellow Boots was exciting because of the actors involved with them. Also, Abhay has a brilliant sense of style while Kalki has all the grace and elan needed to carry any kind of styling.

What are your future projects?
My forthcoming projects are That Girl in Yellow Boots by Anurag Kashyap, Society by Rahul Dholakia and Golmaal 3 by Rohit Shetty. These are quite a few films in my kitty right now but I am really looking forward to doing one of them which is an Indo- German production.
