Taking on all the responsibilities of Naya Theatre on her shoulders overnight seems to be weighing her down. 45-year-old Nagin, daughter of the late veteran theatre person Habib Tanvir scarcely smiles. In fact, every time the photographer urges her to smile at the camera, she snaps, “I don’t smile that much, you know.”

After the sudden demise of her father, her colleagues and juniors in her team agree that Nagin has efficiently recovered from her personal loss and has taken over the reins of Naya (theatre group) just the way her dad would have liked her to. Dhanno Lal Singh, an actor in her group tells us, “She is a mother to many younger members of the group and a sister to us who are around her age. Whoever she deals with, she is fair to everyone.”

Devilal Nag, the senior most member of the group says, “It was amazing how she handled the group after Tanvirsaab passed away suddenly.” We ask him if recent speculations were true that right after the veteran’s demise, the group had become disorganised.

Devilal is diplomatic, “There are issues everywhere, and even if any of us make a mistake, and she reprimands us for our error, we take it in our stride.”

Naya has been touring the country with their acclaimed plays like Agra Bazaar, Sapna and Raj Rakth. We ask Nagin whether a new production will see the daylight soon and she says, “We are comfortable doing our old plays. It has just been five months since my father passed away. We are not in a position to think of a new production so soon.” However, the actor informs us that the problem of not being able to find a space for rehearsal has been solved. She says, “We have been given access to a space in the city (Bhopal) to carry on with our rehearsals.”

Though some of the problems that the theatre group was grappling with seem to have been solved, the actor adds that the group does not have to pay any rent for the space for the time being, she also informs us that the state government has withdrawn the grants that were coming their way earlier.
