Highlights and achievements of DGPs, IGPs conference since 2014

For the first time in history, the annual DGPs, IGPs meet from December 2 to December 5 is being organised in virtual mode. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given round 15 hours of his time to the meet held every year.

Since 2014, there has been a paradigm shift in the format, venue, topics covered, deliverables etc. Some of the important highlights and achievements of the Conference are as follows.

Since 2014 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been attending every meet besides giving medals to the PPM awardees of Intelligence Bureau. It is also a platform where DGPs of States/UTs interact with the Prime Minister and share views on challenges faced by the country. Earlier, the Prime Minister only attended the PPM investiture ceremony and made one address to the participants.   

With the keen interest of the Prime Minister, the number of sessions/topics during the DGPs, IGPs meet has increased manyfold. A strong emphasis is now being laid in improving day to day policing in service of people. The meet is now more broadbased as it includes Guest Speakers and subject experts as well as professionals from different fields.

On the direction of the Prime Minister a detailed action taken report is presented before him and the Union Home Minister by the Conference Secretary. The recommendations made are strictly followed by the Conference Secretariat along with Nodal officers of States/UTs.

The conference is held in different parts of the country every year. It was after the recommendation made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the venue was for the first time shifted outside Delhi in 2014. The shifting of the venue gave the VVIPs and delegates an opportunity to interact informally while staying together during the conference.

Scientific investigation has also been encouraged by the Prime Minister during the DGPs, IGPs Conference. A strong emphasis has been laid by the Prime Minister to improve forensic capabilities at the police station level in all states. In order to improve the scientific investigation capabilities of police personnel, National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and Raksha Shakti University have been established.

The Prime Minister has reiterated the importance of cybersecurity to tackle the menace of cybercrimes. And in order to achieve this, a Cyber Coordination Centre (CyCord) was formed to coordinate the cybercrime response of Centre and State Police forces. Cyber Safe portal and National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal was also formed to help law enforcement agencies (LEAs) reach out to cybercrime victims across the country.  

National Coordination Centre (NCORD), as well as a Joint Coordination Committee (JCC), was constituted by MHA on the direction of the Prime Minister. It was set up for collection of actionable intelligence and coordinated action against the drug cartels and network operators of drug trafficking.

The PM suggested for coordinated action and joint exercises by different States against LWE on inter-state borders, resulting in the formation of a Joint Task Force (JTF) by MHA in LWE affected States. This has led to significant achievements on the LWE front and has successfully curtailed the activities of Naxals in their erstwhile strongholds.
