Bijli Bachao: LED-ing with example

With the onset of Diwali, decorative lights and lamps can be seen outside every house across the country. And the trend of using LED lights is helping people save money by reducing electricity consumption, say experts, who work in the field of saving energy. However, Bijli Bachao — a not for profit organisation — claims that though people save energy by using LED lights for Diwali, the shopping of electronic appliances during the festive season without proper research would mean spending more electricity, if the product is not eco-friendly.

The organisation's mission is to provide consumers the right kind of information so that they can make informed decision towards electricity consumption. Through their website, the organisation provides free information to people about how to save electricity, top 10 appliances, general tips on electricity safety, research, news on electricity, among others. The website also has a calculator where people can calculate the benefits of using five star rated electronic appliance like refrigerator as compared to a three star one.

Talking about their initiative, Abhishek Jain, founder of Bijli Bachao, said: "We get more number of visitors on our website during summer than during Diwali. Due to the latest trend of using LED lights, the consumption of energy is less as they more energy efficient. People should buy only LED lights to decorate their house. However, lot of people rush to buy electronic appliances like television, refrigerator, washing machine etc during this festive. So, we suggest them to buy it with an inverter technology that saves lot of energy."

He added: "We have observed that at electronic stores, the staff is not efficient to solve the queries of the public or to suggest them what is best for them in order to save electricity. Most of the time people are misguided by them saying that the cost of maintenance is high for inverter and that is how people land up in buying an appliance that would more electricity."
