In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, state Congress leaders of Meghalaya have sought her immediate intervention, lest the state goes Uttrakhand and Arunachal Pradesh way. While in the Arunachal dissidence cost the party power, but in Uttrakhand party was saved after a protracted battle. The dissidents in Meghalaya rooting for the change in state leadership now claim the support of 14 Congress legislators. They are hopeful of persuading two more legislators to make it 16 to dislodge the chief minister. Congress has 30 MLAs in the 60-member House.

The Congress dissidents have accused chief minister Mukul Sangma of "dictatorial ways." The letter dated May 30, ahead of the PM Modi's rally in Shillong warns the party high command that the BJP leaders are camping in the state capital to engineer defections in the party. "The BJP is camping in Shillong and are in connivance with two cabinet ministers," the letter says. It also claims that dissident Congress chief DD Lapang had a meeting with senior BJP leader Ram Madhav and Himanta Biswa.

Ram Madhav denied having any meeting Lapang, saying, "There is trouble for the Congress there. But their allegations are totally false. The Congress should fix their own issues."

A Congress legislator said on Tuesday that the dissidents want to go slow and remain silent before achieving the target of majority number.

The slow approach is also due to the fact that they have to wait for the appointment of a new AICC leader in charge Meghalaya as the incumbent V Narayanasamy has already been made chief minister of Puducherry.

Moreover, the Shillong MP Vincent Pala is yet to have a proper meeting with all the Congress legislators. "As of now, we are short of the required number, but we are trying to get at least 16 and we already have 14," a dissident legislator said. The legislator said that the dissidents are projecting the MPCC president DD Lapang as their new leader.

The contention of the dissidents is that since the chief minister lost the confidence of nearly three lakh people of Garo Hills in the just concluded by poll to Tura Lok Sabha seat, the Congress legislators should be wise enough to understand what is in store for them.
