Causing discomfort to the Mamata Banerjee government for a minister's alleged move to shield a TMC councillor in the killing of a police officer in Garden Reach, West Bengal governor MK Narayanan on Thursday said that the minister had no business to do it.

"He has no business to do that," Narayanan said when asked to comment on the state Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim's alleged bid to shield TMC councillor Md Iqbal from arrest for gunning down Special Branch sub-inspector Tapas Chowdhury on February 12.

Stating that the police should act on the list of accused named in the FIR, the governor said that investigation had started.

"Let's see. We should uphold law and order," the governor said after visiting the family of the slain sub-inspector in their Thakurpukur residence.

Hakim on Wednesday had said, he did not believe that the TMC councillor was involved in the incident. He had also said that questionable elements could stand behind him at programmes and as people's representative he could not prevent it.
