While the West Congress president Somen Mitra is visiting New Delhi to meet All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi to request him that none of the senior AICC leaders should partake in the January 19 Mamata Banerjee rally on Brigade Parade Ground, Congress Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi batted for the West Bengal state government at the Calcutta High Court against the BJP on Friday. Singhvi saved the day for the Bengal government in the Calcutta HC, where division bench quashed a single bench order allowing Rath Yatra in the state. It put the issue back to the single judge and asked to take the inputs of state intelligence into account.

Senior state Congress leaders alleged that it has caused a lot of embarrassment to party leaders in Bengal. “It has definitely brought a lot of embarrassment to the Bengal Congress leaders,” said West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president Somen Mitra talking to DNA from Delhi. Asked if he had talked about it with Rahul he said, “I have not talked about it to the AICC president but I have conveyed the sentiments to the AICC chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.”

Congress MP and former state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury alleged Singhvi was mercenary. “He is a lawyer by profession and he does not have any political virtue. Whoever will pay him, he will plead for him. It is embarrassing for us and in earlier occasion also he had embarrassed us. It will send a wrong message to the people but who does care?” Chowdhury told DNA.

Singhvi, who met mediapersons later in the evening said that those who were criticising him from opposing a ‘communal rath yatra’ were at fault themselves. “I am addressing you as a Congressman at the PCC headquarters. Those who think that opposing a rath yatra with highly inflammatory and communal overdose is a disservice to the Congress, are doing disservice to the congress themselves.”

Asked if he had talked to the Congress leaders before appearing at the Calcutta High Court, he said, “I don't take advice from unsolicited quarters about whom I should represent or not. I know my duties well. You will find that this overactive drama is done by one specific segment of a few people with motivated interests,” and further clarifying he added, “I am representing the ADG of West Bengal. I don't think he can be called the TMC.”

Congress leaders also said that this was not the first time that Singhvi had caused a face loss for Bengal leaders. “Earlier in April this year soon after he was elected the Congress Rajya Sabha member with the help of TMC support, Singhvi had represented the TMC at the Supreme Court and as a result party MLAs from Bengal had refused to meet him upon his visit here, on the pretext of several excuses,” said a senior Congress leader from Bengal, requesting anonymity.
