G20 Summit: What makes grand Nataraja statue at Delhi's Bharat Mandapam stand out? Know connection to Chola dynasty

Delhi is all decked up for the much anticipated G20 summit. The extravaganza preparations with multiple Indian delicacies served to the foreign delegates to use silver and gold cutlery the Bharat Mandapam of Pragati Maidan is ready to host the G20 summit. 

Amid all the preparations, one item that stands out is the installation of the Nataraj statues at the Bharat Mandapam. The 27-foot-tall statue of Hindu deity Shiv in the Nataraj pose is the largest Nataraja statue in the whole world. 

The statue is 27 feet tall and 20 tons heavy. This Nataraja statue is made from lost wax techniques. Meaning, that this statue is made following the canons and measurements from the Shilpa Shastra and is a finely carved single-piece sculpture with no welded parts. This technique has been followed in India since the Chola period or the 9th century AD. 

This Nataraja statue consists of eight metals, also known as Ashtadhatu. It has 87% copper, 3% lead, tin, silver, gold, mercury, and iron. This statue was made in Tamil Nadu seven months time by sculptor Radhakrishnan Sthapaty of Swami Malai. 

The design of the statue is said to be based on three Nataraja idols of famous Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, Uma Maheswarar Temple in Konerirajapuram in Mayiladuthurai, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur. 

NDTV quoted Sachchidanand Joshi, member secretary of IGNCA saying that the sculpture was finished at the approximate cost of Rs 10-12 crore. The Nataraja is a famous pose of Lord Shiv shown doing the ultimate cosmic dance, also known as Tandava. This pose has very important religious, philosophical, and spiritual significance.

This sculpture has been installed in from of the Bharat Mandapam at Delhi's Pragati Maidan, where the G20 summit will be conducted this year from September 8 to September 10.  All foreign delegates will gather there to discuss global diplomacy and form policy for international growth. India is hosting the G20 summit for the first time ever with 43 global heads coming together.
