The ministry of human resource development is examining several complaints of irregularities received against Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). There have been complaints of irregularities related to appointment of teachers in the university. The irregularities also include those against the former Vice Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to conduct the academic, research, financial and infrastructural audit of AMU which includes quality improvement strategies for faculty recruitment. The ministry said this in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

"Certain complaints of irregularities in the recruitment/promotion of teachers in AMU have been received. They are at different stages of examination and disposal. The UGC has also decided to conduct the academic, research, financial and infrastructural audit of AMU which includes quality improvement strategies for faculty recruitment," MoS Mahendra Nath Pandey said in the written reply.

The allegations against the former VC include illegal transfer of funds to the tune of Rs 51,78,634 collected from students, from the university account to the account of a private trust named Sir Syed Educational Foundation; appointment of a retired brigadier as pro-VC although UGC regulations mandate that the position should be occupied by a professor. The appointment was done by the former VC by invoking his emergency powers. Other allegations include appointment of ineligible candidates, assistant professors were appointed against vacant positions of professor and associate professor; collapse of law and order in the university; and victimisation of teachers and other staff.

Even as AMU is an autonomous body and all the appointments to permanent posts of teachers are made by the Executive Council, the President of India, in the capacity of visitor of AMU, is empowered to initiate an inquiry in respect to any matter connected with the administration of the university.
