An army officer was injured during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, July 6. The officer is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The clash began after a search and cordon operation was initiated in Modergam village following intelligence reports about the presence of two to three militants in the area. The operation led to an intense exchange of gunfire between the militants and security forces. "An encounter has started at Modergam village of Kulgam district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow," said a police spokesperson.

This encounter occurs against the backdrop of the annual Amarnath Yatra, which commenced on June 29 from the twin base camps of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district. The pilgrimage, which is set to last for 52 days, had a new group of over 5,800 pilgrims arrive earlier in the day. The yatra, which is a major religious event, is closely monitored for security due to the region’s ongoing conflict.

The site of the encounter is situated approximately 63 kilometers from Pahalgam, one of the traditional routes taken by the pilgrims to reach the Amarnath cave shrine. The central government has established extensive security measures to ensure the safety of the pilgrims during the yatra. These measures include the deployment of additional forces, surveillance, and coordination with local authorities to manage both security and logistical aspects of the pilgrimage.

The ongoing encounter reflects the challenging security environment in the region, which authorities are working hard to address while ensuring the safety of thousands of devotees participating in the yatra.
