Maharashtra's former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is contesting from the Karad South constituency for the Assembly Elections 2019. The seat is considered a stronghold for the party since the 1960s. Chavan is the sitting MLA from there constituency.

The 73-year old leader served as the 17th Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the incumbent CM Ashok Chavan was forced to resign for his alleged involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society Scam.

Previously, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha and served as the minister of state in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) during the Manmohan Singh government.

Referred to as a technocrat with a clean, non-controversial image, Chavan is a low-profile leader and a man who enjoys the confidence of the top Congress leadership. He is a graduate of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and holds an MS degree from the University of California.

Chavan has won the Lok Sabha Elections from Karad constituency thrice in 1991, 1996, and 1999. He, however, lost the seat in 1999 to NCP's Shriniwas Patil.

Karad South will see a contest between Congress' Prithviraj Chavan, BJP’s Atul Bhosle, and Independent candidate Udaysinh Undalkar-Patil, son of Vilasrao Undalkar-Patil, who was seven-time MLA from the seat.

The voting for 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra was held on October 21. The counting is being held on Thursday, October 24.
