"This instrument will carry out surgeries with precision and accuracy for knee and hip joint replacements," said state health minister Jaynarayan Vyas in his address at the unveiling of 'Robodoc' at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad on Thursday.

'Robodoc' is a new age, technologically advanced surgical instrument used for complete knee and hip joint replacements. Vyas hailed it as the changing face of Civil Hospital at Ahmedabad.

The instrument will help doctors in pre-surgical planning, control of bone movement, robot to CT registration and the like in pre, during and post surgery procedures. Claiming it to be the first-of-its-kind in India, Vyas said that 'Robodoc' costs around Rs10 crore.

"Since a three degree misalignment has been reported when surgeries are carried out manually, 'Robodoc' will help doctors achieve 100% alignment thereby leading to a successful surgery", informed Vyas.

He further said that doctors will be trained in using this new machine to carry out precise surgeries. "For this, a team from Korea will be visiting on July 19. They will provide doctors on-the-job training," added Vyas.

Although cost factor to be borne by patients is yet to be decided, officials said that they would be charged only for recurring expenses.

Speaking on the issue, Dr HP Bhalodiya, joint replacement surgeon at Civil Hospital said, "Robodoc' makes use of high-speed metal bar and other disposable parts which have to be replaced after every case."

He further said, "The cost of joint and medicines are some of the recurring costs which have to be borne by the patients. However,
this will only be 60% of the cost charged by private hospitals, which ranges from Rs1 to 2.5 lakh."

For below poverty line (BPL) patients, this new technology will come at minimum costs while everything else is free for them. "In the next fortnight, Civil Hospital is likely to receive high-tech MRI and CT scan facilities," added Bhalodia.
