The 24-year-old accused in the Mumbai BMW hit-and-run case Mihir Shah, changed his appearance to throw the police off his trail, the prosecution told a court on Wednesday. Shah was later remanded to police custody till July 16.

Mihir, the son of Shiv Sena politician Rajesh Shah, who is currently in power, was taken into custody on Tuesday, over 48 hours after his BMW automobile killed a woman and injured her husband on Sunday morning when they were riding a two-wheeler in Mumbai's Worli neighbourhood.

According to the police, the speeding car pulled Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, along the road for 1.5 km before Mihir switched seats with his driver Rajrishi Bidawat and left the scene in a different car. It is said that the driver ran her over while reversing the BMW.

Mihir was placed under police arrest until July 16 by a municipal court on Wednesday. The accused should be given maximum custody, the police said the court during the hearing, as they need to find out who helped him flee and because the car's licence plate hasn't been found yet.

After being detained by police on Sunday, Bidawat was placed under arrest until July 11. After a day in police prison, Rajesh Shah, who had also been arrested in connection with the crime, was released on bail.

Before giving up the car, Mihir Shah reportedly spoke to his girlfriend forty times following the collision, according to NDTV. He went to her residence and hailed a car. They might also question her.
