Rain in July has already proved fruitful as six of the seven lakes that provide water to Mumbai and Thane are already full. While two of the lakes — Barvi and Upper Vaitarna — overflowed on Monday with five dam gates being opened, Bhatsa will most likely follow suit soon.

Rainfall in July has filled the six dams in Thane district with enough water to last till next monsoon. "The storage capacity mark for Upper Vaitarna is 605.80 metres and it has crossed that level," said Anniruddha Sahastrabuddhe from Thane district collectorate, adding, "By July 24, Bhatsa will reach the 78 per cent water storage capacity."

Additionally, the district administration, along with disaster management cell, is bracing for all eventualities once Bhatsa overflows. "There are chances that the bridge at Sapgaon in Shahapur gets submerged. Hence, we have informed the concerned authorities to be prepared," he said.
