US State Department on Monday condoled the death of former President Pranab Mukherjee, saying that he will be forever remembered in the annals of Indian history.

"Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of former President Pranab Mukherjee. We stand with the people of India as they grieve the loss of a great leader who will be forever remembered in the annals of Indian history," US State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) tweeted.

Scores of foreign countries and leaders from across the world have paid tribute to the former President, who passed away at the age of 84.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing grief over the death of Pranab Mukherjee.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent his condolences saying that Mukherjee "made a significant personal contribution to strengthening the relations of a particularly privileged strategic partnership between our countries."

Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee passed away at the age of 84 on Monday in Delhi's Army's Research and Referral Hospital after his medical condition declined in the morning and he suffered a septic shock due to lung infection.  where he was admitted earlier this month.

The last rites of the former president will be conducted today (i.e. Tuesday, September 1) and he will be laid in state at his official residence in 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi, where citizens will be allowed to pay their last homages to the towering statesman, albeit following coronavirus disease (COVID-19) guidelines.

He was admitted to the Army Hospital in Delhi on August 10 to undergo a surgery for the removal of a clot in his brain and had later tested positive for COVID-19.

Mukherjee himself had tweeted before being admitted to the hospital, saying, "On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for COVID-19."

Pranab Mukherjee served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017.

Before being elected as the President, Mukherjee served as the Union Finance Minister from 2009-2012 and a senior leader of the Congress.

He was also awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2019 by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
