Over 100 monkeys — also revered as reincarnation of Lord Hanuman — have died mysteriously in the past one week in the Dabraasi village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh.

Agitated over the mysterious deaths, which some worry could be a mysterious disease while others worry could be poisonous in nature, villagers held demonstrations and have sought a high-level probe. Gram Pradhan Rajeev Goyal alleged that villagers fear the monkeys were poisoned to foment communal trouble.

"Every day, about 15 to 20 monkeys are dying. The toll has crossed well over 100 in the past week. Some villagers fear that they were given poison. Others feel that some mysterious disease has hit them and may soon spread to humans. We demand a thorough probe to allay fears," demanded the Gram Pradhan.

To that end, a team of forest department officials and veterinary doctors rushed to the village and conducted post-mortems, but failed to ascertain the real cause of deaths. CMO Aroha, Dr BV Singh has also ordered a probe into the issue.

"It seems they died due to hunger and amoebic dysentery. A few of them had liver and pulmonary diseases. Viscera samples have been collected and sent to Bareilly for ruling out the poison theory," said Dr TP Singh, a veterinary doctor who performed autopsy.

Vets are, however, baffled over deaths of over 100 monkeys with dysentry. "The real cause of death is yet to be ascertained. We will come to some conclusion after receiving reports from Bareilly," said Dr Singh.

Meanwhile, the villagers, to honour the monkeys, performed their last rites as per Hindu tradition and are planning to construct a Lord Hanuman temple in the village.
