India's independence was earned through the sacrifices made by freedom fighters; it was not given to them on a silver platter. India proudly commemorates the valiant efforts of those who fought to bring about its independence every year.

Rajkumari Gupta belonged to the group of unsung freedom fighters and was one of them. These individuals are not probable to be mentioned in any standard histories of the freedom movement.

Who was Rajkumari Gupta?

Hailing from Banda Zilla of the Kanpur district, Rajkumari was the daughter of shopkeeper,  born in 1902.  At the age of thirteen, she wed Madan Mohan Gupta, a committed Congress party member. The pair joined the Independence movement in response to Mahatma Gandhi's views.

But as the years went on, she found herself derived to the revolutionaries who thought that only an all-out battle against the British could end colonial rule, especially after the Non-Cooperation Movement ended abruptly.

She started sending covert messages and materials to Chandrashekhar Azad's fellow members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HRA) without her husband and in-laws knowing because she had developed close ties with the revolutionaries, especially Azad.

In Allahabad, she eventually made her way into Azad's inner circle. Her involvement in the liberation struggle peaked during the infamous Kakori Conspiracy, in which revolutionaries from the HRA stole money from a train headed for Lucknow while it was travelling through railway stations. This robbery was planned to raise money for the HRA's armed resistance to the British. Delivering weapons to the revolutionaries was Gupta's task, which she successfully completed.

Raj Kumari, who was tasked with providing revolvers to those involved in the Kakori operation, reportedly hid the weapons in her undergarment before heading out to hand over them while wearing khadi clothes with her three-year-old son. She was expelled from her marital residence after being detained and disowned by her husband's family, according to The Hindu.

Gupta took part in the freedom movement and served multiple prison sentences for it. She obviously had no regrets and continued to be extremely proud of her contribution to the freedom struggle.
