Jaipur Metro extension: Suggestions of citizens invited

Recommended to be implemented in two stages, the second phase of Jaipur metro is proposed to be extended to VKI in North and to outer ring road in South. The recommendations have been made at the new comprehensive mobility plan of Jaipur metro that has been made public on Wednesday to invite public suggestions. 

The study carried out by Egis Rail has evaluated 8 possible alignments for the phase-II of metro including the initially proposed alignment of Sitapura-Ambabari. It has held the previously proposed model viable if further extended a little further at both ends. 

The new proposed route has also been altered a little from the original plan to connect Airport and Collectorate and increases the length of the North-South Corridor to 38 kilometres from 23 kilometres proposed initially. The extension though is expected to considerably increase the cost of the mega-transport project, the study suggests its necessary to increase the passenger load and add viability. 

“The ridership would be moderate at the start, it would pick up as the peripheral areas start developing. There is, thus, need to extend the metro to peripheral areas of the city,” suggest the study. 

The proposed metro route is expected to have two underground sections, one between underground stations at Sanganer and Airport. The other under MI Road between stations of Ajmeri Gate, Government Hostel, Sindhi Camp, and Collectorate. The proposal though is waiting for public suggestions.

“A mass road transit system (MRTS) has been proposed on major roads of the city as part of the mobility plan. The citizens can review the plan and submit their suggestions by July 3,” said a senior officer at Jaipur Metro. The final report on the study is expected to be drafted by August after the suggestions and objections received are duly satisfied.
