Instilling hope in old people with knee problems, the doctors at a city-based hospital treated an 85-year-old old couple with bilateral (both sides) total knee replacement surgery (TKR).  The couple was suffering from knee pain for the past 20 years.

Satyanarayan Goyal, a retired government employee and his wife Sushila developed knee pain due to overuse and osteoarthritis respectively. The pain was not letting them lead a normal and healthy life.

“Most people have the perception that knee replacement is risky, involving complications with less chances of recovery,” Dr BR Bagaria of Manipal Hospital said.

“However, the key to minimising the risk of complications lies in a careful and thorough evaluation of the patient’s symptoms, the degree of damage, range of motion, if the deformity is correctable etc. prior to the procedure,” he added.

“Total knee replacement surgery, if done well and for the right deformities, can relieve pain and allow an individual to a return to a remarkably high level of activity. In addition, it also can help patients remain independent and pain free,” Dr BR Bagaria added.

After surgery both the patients recovered in a month’s time and are leading an independent life.

“Past 20 years have been very stressful for us. As parents, having been dependent on children is very unfortunate thing for us which we wish nobody should go through,” said Goyal.

“Through this case we would like to convey a message to public that there is hope for old people with knee problems. During follow-up, we have observed that the patients have recovered completely and now they are able to perform their daily routine work without any assistance or pain in their knee. It may take as many as 6 weeks for a patient to feel steady on feet,” G Karthihaivelan, Unit head, Manipal Hospitals said.
