Barbie has always been a great influence, especially for the kids. Be it her svelte figure or her fancy clothes, a lot of young girls look up to her as their style icon. At every stage, Barbie has ushered in some amazing trends — be it the trademark pony tail or characters inspired from fairy tales. The American doll has certainly created waves.

But causing much debate is the latest new of a Barbie that features the Tokidoki tattoos on her body. Oh yes, the makers are sure to have taken the inspiration from youngsters who have craze for inking. But considering the fact that they target the children between one and eight years of age, this new feature has got the famed product into a lot of trouble.

The big debate about this new feature is that it sends out wrong signals to children. Several people, especially parents across the world, say that this might not have the right influence on the kids. This added feature of the tattoo has egged a lot of young children to get inked at a very young age.

Talking about this problem, business woman Pollyana Patel says, “I have a daughter who is four-and-a-half-years old and she loves to play with her Barbie. She has as many as seven Barbies and I’ve had no issues with it till now. But this added feature is definitely not great news to hear. Kids are vulnerable and get easily influenced by such things. I really don’t understand the need for such features to be added.”

She also says that since kids play for a long time with their Barbies, they would start analysing them and be enticed to get one for themselves too. “Being a mother, I wouldn’t allow my daughter to play with toys that will have a negative influence on them. I don’t understand why they had to come out with these features,” asks Pollyana.

Since Barbie associates itself with the ideal women, this one would create a lot of trouble among the kids says designer Ritu Panday. “They should have done a thorough market research before manufacturing these toys. Initially, they came out with beach wear collection that was just not right. This one too is sending out wrong signals. We understand that this feature has been added keeping the changing times in mind. But they should also remember their target group before coming out with such features,” she explains. Not quite a win, this one!
